East Elliott is an unincorporated area that technically falls within the city of San Diego, however, due to the fact that residential area is mainly along the eastern side, bordering Santee, many consider it to be a part of the town. The land was once owned by the U.S. Marine Corps but due to the over abundance, was sold off in 1961. The majority of the area has been undeveloped and kept for conservation purposes, however, in 2003 the Weston Development company applied to build residential units and was finally approved in 2013.

Santee, California schools are governed by two school districts, Santee Public Schools which operates that town’s elementary schools and the Grossmont Union High School District that governs high schools.

Carlton Oaks Elementary School is located at 9353 Wethersfield Road and serves students from kindergarten to grade eight. The school is home to approximately 860 students throughout the year that enjoy the close knit community, engaged teachers and caring staff.
West Hills High School is also located near the East Elliott community, along Mast Blvd. The public comprehensive high school serves students in grades nine to twelve. The well rated high school, which originally opened its doors to the community in 1987, features a selection of classes and courses, interscholastic sports teams and a number of clubs and groups.
